Default Bumper clamp question

I recently purchased a 1929 Standard Coupe. On one side of the rear bumper, the clamp is the right size and oval but it has ford script on it. I can't seem to find one like this listed anywhere as being correct for any year. Does any one know if this just an after market option or something like that?

The oval bumper clamp you wrote about in your post with the Ford script on it is for a early 28. I am not sure how long they were used on the rear bumperettes, but no nore than half way through 28. You should have forged scriptless oval bumper clamp on the front and rear of your 29 car.

OK. Thanks for the info. I am also trying to figure out what the center clamp on the front bumper is suppose to be if my coupe was manufactured in July of 1929.

Is it the same size as the other oval bumper clamps and does it have the blue paint on it as the other clamps do?

Actually The center clamp that was used May 1929 through the end of 1929 was smaller than the other bumper clamps. This clamp was painted blue in the recesses and was steel clad and chrome plated. The next clamp that was used all through 1930 was the same but stainless clad. I believe this to be correct information according to Brattons . For national judging, you might check the judging standards.

Off the top of my head, Purdy, I think your correct. The only thing I
could add is that the first style oval had a stud,..then later it went
to a bolt...

reverse the information posted..bolt first, then the stud..

Dudley,
I thought all oval 29 center bumper clamps used a bolt and not a stud like the others. Where did you get the info about a stud on some oval 29's?

I thought it was stud instead of bolt but didn't want to say the wrong thing.

These are the POS clamps that came with my Pickup when I bought it. The last picture shows exactly how strong these things are. Both clamps let loose at the same most inopportune time.

I would suggest that if anyone still has any of this style repro clamps, that you run (don't walk) to the nearest place you can order some like Mike shows in his attachment.

As for the main large bumper clamps that connect the bumpers, I usually use old original clamps and install new stainless clamp covers. Its easy and looks good as the repro clamps to me.

this is just what the Restoration/ Judging Standards were designed for.
Pay the $25 to MAFC or MARC and you will have 20 years of research and expertise at you hand.
The fat cast bumper clamps are junk...Brattons, Snyders, Berts, Mikes, have better clamps available, check 'em out.

Either strong tie your front bumper onto the braces or replace those type clamps with high quality ones. The type shown are prone to break, and you will end up driving over your front bumper. I found a cracked one on my coupe just last week. Got this tip from Lynn Sondenaa.
