Oil pressure and water pipe question
My friend that recently purchased the 1928 Phaeton has a few more questions. He'd like some advice on.
There was an oil filter added to the engine. There is an oil pressure gauge mounted below the intake manifold. It reads 2 lbs with motor running. Thoughts on this? Also there is a tapped hole in the back of the block with about a 3/8" copper pipe connecting to the water inlet. The unit is nearly done. Leave it or remove? Thanks in advance. Charley |

Re: Oil pressure and water pipe question
It appears the pipe was installed to add to the flow of water to #4 water jacket, probably does not do very much never saw this done and wouldn't drill and tap a hole in the side of any A block.

Re: Oil pressure and water pipe question
I have seen several Model A engines in Pietenpol Airplanes that have that same modification. Since the engine is mounted back to front my assumption is that it compensates cooling at that pinch point area behind #4 cylinder at any angle of flight. That pinch point is the spot where you can get flash steam created causing overheating issues.

Re: Oil pressure and water pipe question
I've pondered putting coolant into the back of the block to help cylinders 3 and 4 but have never got it done. When I tow with the Model A, the motor is working hard all of the time so I figured that would help keep it cool. These days, I'm thinking more like an oil cooler so there is no change to the block.
As for your question about oil pressure, 2 psi when the motor is warm is pretty normal.

I doubt that water line does anything as the pump pulls water from the top of the head, there is no pressure to push water to the rear of the block. |
