39-40 coupe struts
Hi gents
Anyone put adjustable rear struts in a 39 or 40? If yes what?

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
I would like to adjust my stance. Making the rear higher. I’m thinking an adjustable strut could replace the tube shocks and get the look I’m seeking.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
30-39: Can you post a few photos of your car's current stance and what the rear suspension looks like? Is it stock? Can you count the number of leafs?
It may be that your OEM transverse rear spring is worn out, like a broken main leaf or the incorrect spring was used to replace the OEM spring. You could install longer shackles, also. Last edited by 19Fordy; 02-23-2020 at 11:38 AM. |

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
Not sure struts and the original spring would play well together. At the least it would be a very stiff rear suspension. Lots of ways to change the stance of a vehicle, post a little more details on what you currently have and where you wanting to end up.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
Back in the day, I added 6 inch shackle bars to my 40Merc. The bottom of the shackles rubbed the tires in a turn.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
If you have a good set of original shocks they do quite well. As for adding tube shocks, there are brackets that show up on ebay quite often for the rear of 35-40 cars and trucks.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
He said above that already has tube shocks; this is why I mentioned "air shocks". Shocks are shocks; struts are springs and shocks in one. I, for one, would not ask one to do the job of the other.

My 39 Air shocks pic, hope it helps. Obviously, I don’t extend it all way up.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
If springs and shocks seem ok other option is to look at a taller tyre on rear.
Like a set of 700 's. Phil NZ |

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
Perhaps I.m missing something as I am not clear as to what you really want to do and what type of suspension you already have under the car.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
Hi Fordy - it’s stock springs with tube shocks. Was looking for easy way to raise rear. Looks like air shocks are way to go.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
I also have air shocks on the rear of my 48. Monroe air ride or something like that. They lift the rear just enough, due to the weak springs. Have to keep an eye on the pressure, tho as they leak down in a week or two.

Re: 39-40 coupe struts
At one time they had what were called helper springs that looked similar to a coil over.
Looks like they call them load levelers or load adjusters. |
