Default 1928 experimental motor

I got this motor off eBay. It was made in July 28. I plan on rebuilding this motor when I get time.

Wow! Thanks for sharing photos of your engine. The last one of these experimental engines I saw was at Hershey and it was a rusty mess. This engine is the first one I have seen the innards of. Here are my observations:
1. No oil return tube openings in the valve cover and block;
2. Oil feed tubes in the valve chamber to the front and rear;
3. 5 camshaft bearing journals;
4. Water inlet opening with a much smaller baffle.
Please post some more photos of this engine.

Was this the one that just sold?

There was a guy a year or so back (maybe more see how time fly's!) that was looking for the valve chamber cover. I posted a link in the classifieds hoping he would see it. I started going thru the wanted ad's, but saw it would be a huge task to find his ad not knowing when it was placed.

Here is some more "scoop" on these engines:

Another interesting cylinder block
feature was that there were a nu
mber of special experimental
engines (between 1353 and 1355) that were also
produced between July 9, 1928 and October 2,
1928. These special cylinder blocks did not incl
ude the A-6645 oil return pipe assembly, along
with the oil return pipe connections on the A-6015 cylinder block and the A-6520 valve chamber
2
cover. The addition of oil return holes were drilled on the floor of the valve chamber to allow the
oil to drain back into the oil pan along with other special features.

When I saw the title all I could think of was,

Every time I touch a motor, it is an experiment.
Sometimes it succeeds and sometimes it fails.

Sorry I couldn’t help myself.
I have little self control left.

Also, not the relief cuts in the two intake ports for gland rings.

Does the oil return from valve chamber to pan by over flowing the boss located between #4 cylinder lifter bosses?

There are some excellent photos of the engine on this site, pages 12-14:

If there's a crack it's hard to see.
