Default 40 coupe

Hi Gents

What is the biggest rear tire that will fit in a stock rear?

I'm sure you can get a 7.50 X 16" tire in there on a stock Ford 16" X 4-1/2" wide wheel....at the least! DD

I'm running 15's. 195/65/15s on the front and 235/75/15s on the rear. They're Diamondback white wall radials. Mines not a restoration more of a road/street car.

1st photo is of my 40 in 1971 with stock rear and 15 inch 1950 Lincoln rims
wearing 8:20 x 15's.
5:60x15's were on the stock front end.

2nd photo is same rear wearing 7:60 x 15 tires on 15 in. rims.

If tires are too wide the inner side wall will rub against the rear spring perch.
5:60 x 15's are on the front with 4 in. dropped axle and Posie reversed eye spring.

Don't have any radial tire knowledge or 16 in rim knowledge.

I have a stock '40 rear end and stock 15X5 Ford wheels. I would have liked to use 235X75X15 tires; But found I would have to de-flate them to stuff them under the fender. So, I used 225X75X15 with no issues.

I've been able to use 235X75's under every '40 I have owned.

Make sure you have clearance to change a flat tire if needed.
