Question Water Pump Question

Hello all,

Iv'e been getting ready for the summer and I have removed a riveted 4 blade fan and am installing an Aluminum 2 blade fan so I have the pump out of the car.

After looking at the pump, it appears to be of the leakless kind and I have no history of it. It has never given me a lick of trouble and the car doesn't overheat. The only reason for the swap is it's cheaper now than it will be later. I have a question about a leakless water pump.

How do you inspect one for sign's of wear, by blade degradation and rough turning like a modern day pump or does it require disassembly for inspection?

Regards
Bill

If it was ok with the old fan put the new one on. If it dosen't have any play fore and aft should be good to go. Drive on!

If it has alot of play fore and aft the vendors sell a collar that goes on the pump shaft to adjust the play

Thanks Guy's,

There is absolutely zero for and aft play, the shaft is shinny and bright. The impeller is blackish with some rust coloration. The backside of the pump is rusty and I can rub rust from it. The outside looks fine. It turns nice with a little resistance with a very slight cogging which I assume is the bearing's.

Are the collar's added in case the impeller pin gives way preventing the shaft from flying into the radiator?

Also, should a collar be added for safety regardless of condition?

And finally, should the pin be replaced simply because I have the pump out right now?

I have been known to slightly over-think thing's a little and this just might be one of those time's.

Regards
Bill

If there is rust on the water pump, there's rust in the cooling system. Make sure you run 50/50 coolant or at the least some rust inhibitor.

Since it is leakless, it has probably been modified with a ball bearing up front. This means the forward grease fitting is purely symbolic and none functional. Since it has a seal in the aft end, the packing nut should be left loose so the packing is loose but available for tightening if the seal fails. . When greasing the aft bushing the packing nut should be unscrewed and moved forward to eliminate trapped air and allow observation of the grease oozing out between the shaft and bushing. Good news is the pump is easily installed with a two blade fan since the radiator does not need to be removed (just angled forward some). Just went thru this drill replacing a six-bladed fan with a cast aluminum two-blade unit.

Exactly.
Every engine needs antifreeze to prevent rust and lubricate moving water pump parts.
