A man and his dog
I took a few moments today to see just how Sailor, my Bichon, would adjust to the new pickup truck. I told him that if he didn't like riding in it, then I'd eat my hat. Well, he drove right off into the sunset and came back a few minutes later wearing this one for me to munch on and offered me some Ranch Dressing to go with my meal. Seems he prefers driving that just riding. He seems to think that his dog license also includes driving. :-)
(Every single lie of this is the truth, I swear!)............ film at eleven ..... :-) Anyone else got some nice "doggie in the A" photos to share? Now if I could just get him to tune up the "Old Gal" an' keep her gassed up and ready to go.......... :-) Last edited by coupe1942; 06-05-2016 at 03:27 PM. |

Re: A man and his dog
Some dogs are so universally amazing to the many who have experienced having them as part of a family.
Those raised very close to humans appear to have exceptional human traits if one is observant. There is no end to stories told about the mind reading, loyalty, and life saving protection offered by these pets. |

Re: A man and his dog
I have taken in a stray dog from the last storm we had here in Ada, OK. I couldn't leave him outside in the storm and the road next to us is very busy and I didn't want him harmed or killed out there in the road. I didn't want to see him put down at a shelter or pound, so we have kept yet another of God's gifts to man. Unfortunately, we already have 3 other rescue dogs and really don't need a fourth.
I took him today to check and see if the owner had him chipped or not. Unfortunately, he was neutered, but not chipped. No luck so far in finding him a good home, but the vet says I can post a note and photo at their site, so i am thinking who in the world would not love a dog that loves riding in a Model A? Guess I'll have to stop by Staples or Walgreen's and have them run off some photo posters. I call him Bud and he is in lock step with every move I make. so as much as I enjoy him, I still want to find the original owner and return him if possible. He sure rides well and is well behaved inside the vehicle. Here are some Bud photos from this morning. |

Re: A man and his dog
Remember reading a very interesting book written years ago written by an American Indian on training Hunting Bird Dogs.
He described his American Indian Version of God's Creation of water, earth, birds, man, and said that God did not create the dog. His reason for God not creating the dog at the time of Creation was that he felt God already had a dog. After having a rescued dog similar to your Bud, and after my looking into your Bud's peaceful eyes, my guess is that if Bud's love and respect for your rescuing him could be measured on Cartesian Coordinates, his emotional respect for you would approach infinity. |

Me and the girls. They don't care where the car is parked as long as they get to sit in it!

My gal dog, Dusty, a wire hair Jack Russell, as she sits out in the truck. She needs a grooming, but she looks pretty spiffy to me. :-)

Re: A man and his dog
Don't want to put a damper on the fun of riding with dogs....we enjoy it too with ours but they have dog harnesses and are tethered so they can move around a little but still safely anchored to the seats. They become missles during abrupt stops and would likely not survive a head on accident if not anchored in. Also, some are quite active and climb all over the driver.....worse than texting while driving!

Re: A man and his dog
To a certain degree, your correct. It is always a personal choice to tether or harness a dog in any vehicle. Your even totally correct that they can indeed become loose objects in an emergency stop or even by their moving into the driver's seat or beneath the driver's legs while he/she is driving.
I have ridden with my dogs for many, many years in both my previous Model A's and in my sidecar rig. I have tethered them and also ridden without such. Each has a certain risk factor built into it in a manner. The 55-70 mph speeds we generally ride at in my sidecar rig actually reveals that no tether, harness or even super glue will likely do all that much in a major crash for them and can just as easily hold them in place to suffer injuries they may not otherwise. A dog harness is not quite the same as a seat belt in design or in function when you really look at them. The one time I did flip my sidecar rig over on top of me, I was very glad the dogs were not tethered or harnessed in the hack. In fact, it was the one time I didn't even have them riding along with me when it happened. If they had been, it would have been highly likely that the tether would have kept them secured, but allowed them to drop right down onto that right side muffler or set of red hot jugs below and kept them there scalded until the rig could be righted. That 600 lb. rig was no light weight to have laying on top of a tethered or harnessed dog, too. Again, it is totally a personal choice as to how one rides or chooses not to with dogs, cats or any animal inside a vehicle of any type. Like anything else in a wreck, they too can be loose flying objects and that is indeed factual. That said, tethers and harnesses do not have the safety features in design as a seat belt is for humans. Everything in life is a risk in some manner so make your choice and live with it. Me, I'll continue to ride with my dogs and enjoy such tethered or not. I have special seat belt adapters for installing a dog harness when I choose though. I have to install my seat belts in first though. All of my own dogs have always been well trained enough to stay seated where I put them as we travel. Since I do have a pickup with the wood stakes in back, I'll probably be adapting that area to make into a sort of dog catcher-like vehicle and probably let the dogs ride back there for the most part if all three are with me. https://youtu.be/cw1grVC8Lkk |
