Coating the armature . . .
Any thoughts on what product would be suitable to coat the amature of a starter and/or generator (excluding the commutator of course). Polyurethane? Shellac?

Glyptol, made by GE, used in the industry.
Buy at your local electrical supply store. Last edited by 42merc; 09-18-2020 at 06:15 AM. |

Re: Coating the armature . . .
X4 on the Glyptol.
The power plant I worked at used Glyptol on EVERY motor, both exposed armature windings and the field coils. They claimed it prevented "working" of the wires under magnetic stress, and consequent wear-through of the varnish insulation. It is a bitch to get off for re-winding, however. By the time you get to that point you're talking a major rebuild anyway. It is also used a lot on the interior of cast iron motors/transmissions after tanking or blasting. Seals in the errant pieces of sand or grit and makes an interior surface the oil can "slip down on" easily. https://www.amazon.com/Glyptal-Brush...516BM8VVKG3WC7 Joe K

X5 on the Glyptol,
Have used it for a lot longer time than I would like to admit. The first time I used Glyptol was when I was working on Model A's to make a little money for collage. That was 66 years ago. Been using it every since. Chris W. |
