Question about selling A parts

I realize that there is a section for selling Model A stuff, but I am looking for input on what works.

I listed two model A motors that are in sad shape in the swap section because I need room in my garage for what I consider a small amount ($180 and a Bottle of Pinot Noir) and got no interest. There are two heads, a bell housing, oil pans, crank shafts, cams, timing gear covers, and many other parts.

I guess my real question is. What works best for selling stuff?
Is it better to just list the stuff separately?

NH is a bit out of the way for someone like me on the west coast. If I need something like that I would go to either a club member or a swap meet. Shipping would be prohibitive. Just my thoughts.

FWIW I use ebay and have pretty good luck. I have NOT sold anything as big as an engine. I always sell the various components. I usually start with a very low starting bid and use the PO boxes and include a reasonable amount for the shipping. By starting low you get lots of lookers and usually a good number of bidders. I actually sold some new hinges I didn't need and got more than I paid for them from one of the supplies. Not sure what the rational was in that case but the buyer was VERY happy.

For something hard to ship such as core motors, I would go with something local; like facebook marketplace or Craigslist.

Depending on how "sad shape" these engines are, they're only worth scrap iron price. I suggest dismantling these engines, pressure test the blocks, mic the cams, cranks cylinders, magna flux the flywheel housings. Then a potential buyer has an idea of what he is getting and more apt to make a reasonable offer.

I just bought a pig in the poke engine for $50 locally. #1 piston busted and babbit shot but actually looks like a better core for rebuilding than my truck’s engine.

Engines that are in the way and not needed. I trade off for a case of Beer.

I had a dozen motors that were hot-tanked Maged and ready to use also had polished on size cranks that went with and new Babbitt . For years I couldn’t find a home and sad when we moved they went to the scrapper. I tried to give them to a local engine builder as well. He did take a 1928 motor with the extra cam bearing but didn’t even get a cup of coffee or doughnut... . This is a few years ago and hope times have changed..

the model a buy sell face book group has enough members to get people near by interested in what you have. I would buy it if its in my area. The problem here is that I dont look in the swap page much because things are not sorted by area and the amount of available parts flow is much less than on FB. Also face book market place has replaced craigslist. they started to charge for car and motorcycle adds on CL. that has scared away everyone but a few dealers. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ModelABuySALEorTrade/

FWIW, I would never buy a bare block. I figure it would have been stripped, inspected and found to be too bad to spend any $ on so it was left. I'd only be buying trouble. On top of that, it seems no body keeps the main bearing caps. What is the use of a block without those - other than an anchor!? An engine that hasn't been stripped is a gamble but a far better chance than a rejected block unless the seller has had it tested and can show the results.

Thanks for all the recommendations and insight. They are complete motors, cranks, pistons, rods, bearing caps, heads, pans, cams, etc. not just blocks.
It is sad to hear that people find it necessary to scrap usable or almost usable parts when in a few years they will be as scarce as hen’s teeth.
I’ll try Craig’s list and Facebook. If that doesn’t work I’ll try selling parts.

PS just a bottle of Pinot Noir not a case... maybe a case of beer...

I wish you lived closer I would jump at the purchase. But I would pressure test your blocks in the field, I am set up with portable equipment. In fact I manufacture and offer for sale a pressure testing kit that can be used on all A and B blocks along with the option to test both OHV and flatheads. I have seen many, many Banger blocks with freeze and deck cracks. I have 4 in my shop right now. I hope you get the exposure to move your equipment, you are at an disadvantage living in a area that does not have a large number of Model A'rs.
