Painting a Drake Ford "Script" Bumper
Just purchased a Drake Rear Bumper with Ford script. Want to paint the Ford logo red to match my wheels. What kind of paint would stick to chrome ? Acrylic or enamel ?
Thx....Mike |

Re: Painting a Drake Ford "Script" Bumper
Mike; almost any kind of paint will do. Are you going to brush or spray? Whatever you paint on to chromium will almost certainly need an acid etching prime first. I suspect the word ACID may petrify you but with some careful masking up first, just cover the area you plan to paint. Do you have a picture of the bumper?

My son does pinstriping and has done this work several times with One Shot enamel.
A paint / body shop store should have all you need. House of Kolor (HOK) paints have a good variety of colors as well. What Ken CT did has basically the same material in it. http://www.1shot.com/

Re: Painting a Drake Ford "Script" Bumper
Thanks for the info from all. The bumper gets here Monday and I'll make a stencil of the ford script and then cut out and double-back tape to the bumper. I just didn't know if I should spray it or hand paint and what type of paint will adhere to chrome. I've got some red Testor's in the barn and also there is a Hobby Lobby to buy the pen mentioned. I'll use some type of cleaner maybe Naptha to wipe it off before I do anything.
Tiger...the bumper gets here Monday, but you can look at it on Drakes Web Site. Thx to all...Mike |

Re: Painting a Drake Ford "Script" Bumper
I have developed an in-depth illustrated description on how to paint the recessed lettering on a bumper. Go to www.fzoldcars.com and click on "Technical Stuff" at right hand top of Home Page to see detailed information. Sorry the bumper is for a 1939 LaSalle, but the process is the same and it works.
Several of the pictures are attached, but the specifics are in the description. Check it out - I have used such a method for many years, starting with restoring antique slot machines. Fritz |

Fritz that really looks nice ! I'll check out the link to see how you did it. I did buy a paint pen today and testing it on the old bumper. We'll see.
Thx.....Mike |

Re: Painting a Drake Ford "Script" Bumper
On my last car (early 47) I just painted it freehand over the chrome. no adhesion problems at all and any thing that went outside the recess I just wiped off with a cloth with a bit of turps on. Looked a million bucks.

Look into "Liquid Mask".. The RC car guys use it,, It's cheap and with just a touch of finesse works great for masking
