Thanks for your concerns!
I am not running an open flame over the gas fill opening and like I mentioned I will most likely be pumping it full of exhaust. Believe you me, I wouldn't try it if I thought I would blow up! I don't want to deprive my wife and kids of my smiling face and cheery attitude.

It would probably be safer full of gas rather than empty. When I do my leaf burn piles I start them with a bean can half full of gas and the match has actually went out when I threw it in the can. However, spread that out on the pile and wait a couple minutes for the fumes to rise and then throw the match in the pile, then it is a big "whumpf" when it goes off. You stand back for that....

All this talk about fixing it right why not purge the tank right with an inert gas like argon ?
What do you think the O2 sensor reads in the exhaust of newer cars ?

Ditto, had a dry (for many years) one gallon metal gas can, put a torch to it, made a mini boom, luckily the lid was off.

I have some 20 lb halon fire extinguishers saved for replacement gas and thought about filling the tank with that. It robs the oxygen and leaves no residue. It works really good. It is less smelly than exhaust.

I installed the 31 column support, just because I didn't want to run into this problem in the near future. When I observed someone get into my car, and pull on the wheel, that's when I knew I needed to make the changes.
