Early 1928 open ended bumpers
I noticed on the Mafca web site photo of the week at the bottom is a photo of 3 or 4 guys standing next to the first model A delivered in January of 1928. My question is when exactly did the open end bumper stop? The photo clearly shows bolts on the end of the front bumper. Was it late in December 1927?

Re: Early 1928 open ended bumpers
I have heard the only the first 200 or so cars had open ended front bumpers. I know Dean Drenzek's very early 28 (1927) had open ended rear bumpers but closed end front bumpers. The serial number of his car was 495. Opened front bumpers were probably only installed on cars made in November of 1927 and I am not sure many of them survived. I suspect a number of open ended bumpers have been made over the years from regular bumpers. I could be wrong, but that is what I have read and heard.

Re: Early 1928 open ended bumpers
I have a friend in Nova Scotia Canada that has open ended front bumpers on his early 28 Sport Coupe?
I will be getting more information later this summer when I go out to visit |

Re: Early 1928 open ended bumpers
In accordance with Ford drawing A-17750-A2, only the first 200 Model As had open ended bumpers, see drawings attached.
What is interesting is Ford drawing A17750-C. This bumper has a welded closed end design. This was apparently a prototype and never made it into production for any cars, however by the note at one point apparently it was to be used after the first 200 cars. Don Bivens A616 has closed end. If you carefully read the engine to assembly notes you will see the order that they were sent to assembly and it is a good read.

Re: Early 1928 open ended bumpers
Did the open end A bumpers use the same back clamp as the 26-27 Ford accessory bumpers? The 26-27 had a bent ends that held the top and bottom together and the froty clamp had a square that spaced the two bars apart. Bob
