Default ‘56 Mercury 312 canister

My ‘56 has a canister toward the front of the block, where the breather pipe is…driver side.
What is it ?

It's part of the crankcase road draft ventilation system. There is a filter inside it that should be serviced on a regular basis. New filters are available.
