Engine A1 and some notations from youtube film
I happen to be watching the youtube video of the assemble of the model a engine. It starts our with Henry stamping the 1st engine and then goes into a close up, What i noticed immediately was that it was stamped "1" NOT *A1*....then going back to my notes i found the engine from Gilmore with the correct stamp of the *A1*. Just something that i noticed and wondered when they went back and made the correction OR if that engine was ONLY used for promotional purposes and not a real engine used... Thoughts???
Here is an image of the 2 of them

Re: Engine A1 and some notations from youtube film
Well, there are some among us who think that Edison's A1 has been extensively re-worked by an enthusiastic Ford in order to better please his friend Edison as developments were incorporated with the rest of fleet production.
Why not the engine? Might even be as simple as adding the conforming "A" in front of the number? Good eye though. Can't say I ever thought to compare. Joe K

I really do think the engine in the video was for the sole purpose of promotion..have always thought that.

Those are two different engine blocks, with the left pad having more rounded lower corners and the surface appears to be rough machined, rather than raw cast.

Re: Engine A1 and some notations from youtube film
Maybe engine No. 1 is still out there? A lot of this sort of stuff found it's way into showrooms across the country touting the advantage of the "new ford."
I still remember discussion of experimental engines stored in Edison's Florida Laboratory at Greenfield Village. One of the softcover books (edit: Peterson's "Ford in the 30s") shows pix of these engine blocks done through a window. IIRC some or all of these engines were later sold at one of the various Ford Museum Auctions. Edit: More recently found discussion of these experiments... http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2...-ford-engines/ Joe K

Re: Engine A1 and some notations from youtube film
Because this is an interesting Model A topic, thought I would revise it up, since it last appeared awhile back.
I can not put up the photo [ too complex & frustrating] but if someone has access, in Model A News, Jan. Feb. 1974, there is a most illuminating article on A1. There is a good shot of it in 1943 when Mrs Edison returned it to Ford ; it had not been used on the road since 1933, a couple of years after Edisons death. We can see it has 19" wheels but they are the prototype rolled rim edge types seen on some v. early '30 cars. Other than plated windscreen posts, it look s like any other '28 Phaeton. Early references to it often mention goatskin interior & a green paint scheme. Regarding the stamp pad placement on early engines, A1 should have had a pad just over the outlet, but it does not nor on the posed photos of Henry stamping it or on the test stand. The car itself appears to have originated in late May 1928 & was presented to Edison early in June. There may never have been an A1 engine in Oct. 1927, but Ford certainly stamped one sometime for early publicity? This went into a Tudor at first but later Ford wanted his friend Edison to have it in any body type he requested. |
