Default Removing rear end, while leaving torque tube

My searches didn’t come up with any posts that addressed this specific scenario.

Can I remove the rear end with the driveshaft while leaving the torque tube in place? I can see removing the speedometer drive, the rear radius rods, brake rods, and then unbolting the banjo from the torque tube. At that point will the rear end pull away, and the drive shaft slide out of the tube? Is there a snap ring or something holding it in at the transmission?

Thanks

Whether that is possible or not, can't see reassembly as anything but a right royal pain the the @$$.

Seems to me also that would be a royal PITA. Just remove the whole thing,

You could release the snap ring through the speedometer gear hole—- and it will slide out, but that will just get it apart, to put it together I doubt you could easily get get all the pieces to line up to put it together without removing the torque tube

How would get the universal joint connected on reassembly?

first get the shaft through the seal without damaging it---then through speedo hole get bearing in place then push shaft in further, fit thrust washer align speedo drive gear on splines push a little more, start snap ring then push shaft up to u-joint through speedo gear hole manipulated u-joint onto shaft ---perhaps screwdriver, bent pieces of wire ----add in a lot of '=-*(%#*+ ----then take off torque tube because some of the pieces migrated into u-joint

If you did manage to get the snap ring off and the drive shaft out, you would never get it back together again. The roller bearing, thrust washer, speedo drive gear, and snap ring would all be adrift inside and you would never get them lined up to get the drive shaft back in, let alone engage the u-joint.

Got it. Thanks for the input, lads. Looks like I’ll be doing it the tried-and-true method.
