Model A Drop Axle w/Stock Brakes

Anyone know if a 2" or 3" A drop axle be used with stock Model A mech brakes?

I believe that Ed Johnson runs stock brakes with a dropped axle. You would need to make an extension for the spring perch where the brake lever assy connects.

What are you going to do with the stock mechanical brake levers? You might have to extend your perch mounts or?

Also, anyone know what reverse eye and leaf removal would drop to?
Is this a better/easier way to go to lower the car?

Reverse eye spring will lower car 1.5". I'd be careful removing too many leaves at the front. The starter spring will flatten out as you reduce the spring pack and at some point will bottom out on top of axle.

There was an article 4-5-6 years ago in street rodder mag where it showed installation of a dropped axle retaining the mech brakes. I have it but don't know where. Maybe someone else can help or try posting on the EV8 forum. Funny, I was just thinking about this article over the week-end.

Now that you mentioned it...I also remember that article and I also have it. Thanks for reminding me of it. I believe they did another article on the same Tudor lowering the rear and then adding juice brakes.

I found a Rod and Custom Feb 09 issue having an article about lowering a Tudor but it is the juice brake conversion at the same time.
This the one you are referring to?

It would be greatly appreciated if you could post the information on that article as I am doing the same thing to my 30 Victoria. I thought you could use 32 spring perches but I am ot sure that's the answer.

I think 450 x 16 tires on wires front then 550 x 17 tires on wires, reverse eye, leaves removed front and rear will give me what I'm looking for w/o the need for a drop axle.

The key is to replace the A spring pearches with those from a 1932 Ford. Check the HAMB for a detailed discussion on the change. Bob

I have a 4 inch dropped axle on my speedster (currently under construction) and these are the brackets that we came up with to retain the original braking (improved with cast iron drums and Flathead Ted's floating brake system)

2935ford: It works good. We had to modify the linkage at the brake cross shaft due to interference with exhaust pipes, but you should not have that problem. Stock brake rods work since the actuator lever is in it's original location.

1931Flamingo: Do you mean the tie rod? The drag link is stock with the exception of moving pitman arm opening to the inside to accept '48-'52 F1 arm and closing off original on outside.

Paul in CT: The drag link rubbed tie rod and had a flat spot in it. I think it happens due to a sagged spring. We replaced the spring and used a reverse eye starter leaf, so we still had the problem. This was before the V-8 was in and we thought we needed some clearance so we cut the tie rod and spliced in some extra length to make up for the down turn offsets. As it turned out, the rear face of crankshaft pulley sits just over the tie rod. We probably could have done a little less offset, but it works good and have ample clearance to the drag link.

I believe CT AV8 passed away a year or so ago. Not sure if his son still has the car or not. This is an old thread. You might try sending A PM to CT AV8 in case the son still cks in.
