transmission issue
Just took my '31 Tudor out for a test drive after installing a used engine and trans. The trans jumps out of second gear and also is a little noisy in second. Any possibility of dealing with this without pulling the trans?
Thanks in advance for your help. |

Re: transmission issue
No chance.
It's probably a worn second gear and shaft. Also check the flywheel cover for being dialed in, and check the throw out bearing, all of which require the tranny be out. Thanks pat, I meant the pilot bearing, not the throwout bearing. Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 03-12-2015 at 12:32 PM. |

Re: transmission issue
While the transmitter is out, also check the pilot bearing and input shaft.

Re: transmission issue
Is it possible that you just left out the shifting tower plunger pins?
If so, you can remove the tower with six bolts without removing the transmission from the car.

Re: transmission issue
Funny, I'm surprised in all these years that someone never came up with a split drive shaft such that one could break the shaft (2nd U-joint , say midway toward the rear end) and drop the transmission easier...

Re: transmission issue
Thanks everyone. I will check for the plunger pins before pulling the trans. The original engine block was cracked, the trans was the best (I thought) of the two I had.
Thanks again |

Re: transmission issue
If the plunger and spring was left out, there would be no detent while shifting. You only need to shift from neutral to second to confirm whether or not those parts are in place.

Re: transmission issue
I agree with Tom W, -- 2nd gear or shaft worn, he stated that he installed a used engine and trans and did not say he took it apart, If it were missing detents it would slip out of all gears.
