Default Refurbished original Ford model A cutouts

City: Fredericksburg
State: Virginia
Price: $60-$70

I'm refurbishing original Ford cutouts. I'm offering a few for sale to see if there is interest. I know a lot of guys like the diode cutout or electronic regulator - that's fine. But I have found that the original cutouts are very high quality and work very well if the points are in good condition and the unit is properly adjusted.

Here is what I do with each cutout:
-cut the spot welds and remove the cover.
-clean the internals with electrical contact cleaner.
-inspect and dress the points as needed. If the points are badly worn, the unit is not used, or swap in a better set.
-adjust the point gap, point alignment, air gap and point closure voltage as needed.
-each cutout is tested on my bench using a variable power supply and a Simpson 260 meter to verify operation.
-cover is reinstalled, then the unit is painted with a metallic paint to simulate the original finish. It is not an exact match, but pretty close.
-new terminal hardware and insulators are installed as needed.

Below is a video that goes into detail on how I refurbish these cutouts.

I realize these may not meet fine point standards, but I have tried to use as close as possible, the correct hardware. For the average "driver" car, they looks good and function as they should.

Here are five cutouts that are available. The 2 cutouts on the very left (Oct 1927 - Jan 1928) are $70, the others are $60, plus $9.45 USPS small priority mail box shipping.

I need more original cutouts to refurbish. If you have some gathering dust, please PM me. If you have a cutout that you'd like to have refurbished, please PM me.

Thanks,
Steve

If anyone wants an original patina cutout, I can do that too. Fully serviced as above, but left with original patina. Perfect for a survivor car or truck.

I have 4 refurbished model A cutouts available.

The two on the left are for early, January 1928 and earlier cars. They are $70 each.

The 3rd one is November 1930 and later, but left with the original patina. Perfect for survivor cars or just every day drivers. This one is $50.

On the right is a refinished November 1930 and later cutout. This one is $60.

Lets talk early model A cutouts. The RG & JS states that the early style cutouts with integral lugs were copper or zinc plated. These were used from October 1927 until January 1929. These cutouts are notably different from the later style and are more labor intensive to refurbish. As I've mentioned before, when I refurbish cutouts, I paint the covers to simulate the original plated finish. The metallic copper paint I use works very well and looks appropriate. Zinc plating is a little more of a challenge. I have used both a spray zinc paint and a brighter cast aluminum paint to try to get the appropriate look. One problem doing this kind of work is that original examples of zinc plated cutouts have darkened with age. 90+ years affects the surface finish. Below is a photo with an original zinc cutout and one refurbished with zinc spray paint. Clearly the painted cutout is lighter. But I think it is closer to what the zinc finish looked like when new. But not everyone likes this look.

I have refurbished one in each of the three finishes. See the video link for details of how I refurbish them. These are $70 each plus $9.45 priority mail shipping to a US address.
Thanks - Steve
