Default Modern distributor spark advance

Do you have to switch to a 12 volt system to install a distributor where I don't have to constantly fool with the spark advance. If not who is selling these. Do you still have to set the point's or is it electronic.

  • No, you can stay at 6V
  • The major Model A vendors sell electronic distributors
  • Electronic distributors don't use points. If you go with a mechanical solution like the Nu-Rex modified distributor shaft, that would leave your existing points in place. There are also many folks who hunt down and adapt vintage distributors; you should search the forums for more info if you want to take that option.

FSI ignitions of Oklahoma makes an electronic distributor with centrifugal advance and no points for both 6v and 12v. I use one without any problems.

The F S I is a nice unit, pretty much a plug and play, I have one in operation at the present , I got a smokin good deal on it from a person who never got around to install it, I also in the past have done my own conversions from Japanese car dist's , I had the Japanese car and installed a new dist. shortly before it was totaled and put he dist. back on the shelf and forgot about it till a few months ago , after a re -curve the converted dist is awesome as well . P.M me and I'll see if I can find the part number, it is a fairly simple and cost effective conversion , if you have access to a small bench lathe it can be done in about a half hour.

There is also the nu-rex automatic advance unit that goes in the valve cover area.
This way you can keep the stock dist. but have it automatically advance.
You can use a pertonix ignition module if you want to make it electronic ignition.
Snyders carries them.

The downside to modifications would be access to replacements.

Give FS ignitions a call. They’re out of Ponca city, Oklahoma I believe. Get a better deal buying direct and if you have any issues at all they will stay on the phone and help you work everything out. I bought the Zipper distributor from them. I had the poor guy on the phone for over an hour going through everything and it all turned out to be a fuel flow problem. I’ve been running the distributor for almost a year now and it’s been wonderful. Here in Arkansas I’m in the Ozarks. Lots of hills and it’s nice not having to fiddle with the spark rod.

Mine has the electronic ignition but no auto advance. I'm thinking of adding the NuRex advance. I also carry a rebuilt point distributor pre timed in case the electronic fails.

Dan, why do you have to constantly fool with the spark advance? Do you have a high compression head? Stock Model A's (4.22:1 compression) run with the advance at the 9:00 position after initial startup, unless climbing a significant hill. The hill might require a notch or so of retard depending on what exact position the ignition was timed at.

I have a Mallory Dual Point that has auto advance, and a Model B Distributor (which also fits Model A) which has auto advance. I’ll sell either one for $150 + shipping
