Default Oil filler tube cap question.

Is the cap supposed to have a filter in it. I always thought that it did but was told that it's not. It's been a long time since I owned a car that had an oil filler tube with a cap, but I thought that they had a filter that you had to clean sometimes.

Not originally, it could be an aftermarket, if it works for you clean it and use it.

Do not restrict oil filler tube, also known as crankcase breather. Restrict and blow oil out rear main.

Just slip a sock over the cap and tube.

I removed the material that was in the cap, which was full of oil and probably didn't allow air to pass through it. The reason that I removed it was because I was having a lot of oil blowing out of the rear of the motor when it was running. I haven't had the chance to see if it helped but will let everyone know.

There is a reason the boys at Ford didn't put any kind of restriction or filter in the oil cap or filler tube. The filler tube is the only crankcase breather a Model A engine has and must be totally open. Many older cars have a filter in the oil cap that looks like a pot scrubber. But those older cars also had a very different crankcase breather arrangement which consisted of a road draft tube and a cap designed to help the engine breathe. The "pot scrubber" mesh in the oil cap was put there to reduce the oil vapors escaping and foreign materials entering into the breather system. As many have said here on the Barn, placing an obstruction in the oil filler tube or cap will make the rear main leak oil. That's just the way it is.

Consider buying one of the ‘Fumaze’ caps with flexible hose. I’ve used these on A’s for years and have been very pleased with them. They do not restrict air flow from the crankcase, but direct all fumes under the the floorboard of the car and eliminate odors and oil mist on the firewall.

Sometimes an original shows up on the auction site at a reasonable price. If not, I believe repros are sold by most vendors.

And don't necessarily "push" the cap until it stops when you put it on the tube. Many modern "repop" caps don't have ear placement to keep the cap from getting "real close" and closing off the vent.

You can examine your cap to see where the "stops" are.
