Default Engine locked up

Yesterday my son drove my A model around the block and it quit on him. The starter would not do anything so I tried a push start and the engine would not turn at all. The engine has been running great, no smoke or knock. I put a rebuilt starter on last week and it had been working fine. I though maybe the starter had it locked up so I was going to remove the starter today. I took all 3 bolts out and the starter won't come out. Seems that all the bolts are still in. Don't know how to get the starter out. I've tried rocking the car in gear but no luck. Anybody have any ideas?

Hello, sounds like the bendix is bound up on flywheel ring gear , had this happen but was able to free it up by rocking the car with pushing manually.Maybe try that with starter loose , good luck. Usually happens if the ring gear is worn and missing teeth.

That's what i thought the problem was and is why I have tried to remove the starter. Haven't had any luck yet. May have to remove the transmission.

From your post it sounds as though the starter is in the housing just as though its still bolted in and won't come loose at all. Have you tried prying on the starter to loosen it ?

Have you tried using the hand crank to see if the drive is hung ?

I am going to go with the block of wood and a hammer. I also like the third gear, reverse motion, and then dump the clutch. I think you may end up replacing the ring gear and bendix.

I’ve had excellent luck with the high gear and rock it method! Keep us posted as these are the things that help others a lot ( my dad and grandpa had a lot of fun making me think I had locked up a tractor engine then smart aleck grabs the tire and magically “fixed” it)

The starter bendix is certainly locked on the flywheel ring gear. I like the idea of 3rd gear and pushing it in reverse, then dumping the clutch. Rocking the car must be in reverse with the car in a forward gear or you will just lock the bendix tighter to the ring gear. I have had to disassemble the starter once when it became severely locked to the ring gear.
Trying to start the car with the spark advance or with the starter still spinning can cause this lockup.

That’s a poet statement there my friend. When I was a teenager back in the 90s I worked in tobacco and hay to save enough money for a 500.00 1967 Chevrolet pickup truck and had very little money for my own tools so what I couldn’t beg or borrow I made do the best improvised were the scrap 2x4 block and a flea market ball peen lol . Now I LOVE my Snap-On and Craftsman but sometimes only the block o wood and hammer will do

A bent starter shaft can make it hang up also.

The early 1/2 shafts with Abel drive bend very easily compared to 5/8ths shafts.
