B carburetor fuel starvation
A friend brought his Model A to my shop with a fuel starvation problem. His engine is a relative stock A that he installed "B" carb and intake manifold.
On level ground at about 40 MPH, the car runs fine but on the highway at 50-55 in overdrive , it will run fine for a bit and then start to loose power and the engine will quit. Coast along for 10-15 seconds, the car will start and run fine only to loose power and quit again. After doing all the usual checks for fuel restriction which turned up nothing, the B carb was replaced with an A carb. The car ran fine. Took the carb apart and found a "Grose" Ball Type float valve. This valve appeared to be very restrictive. Everything else looked good, the float drop was good and there was no auxiliary float spring. Replaced the ball type float valve with a used original B float valve from my spare carb parts. Now car runs fine with the B Carb with an original float valve. Question??? Where do I find original B Carburetor float valves? Chris W. Last edited by CWPASADENA; 02-28-2018 at 12:52 AM. Reason: TYPO |

Re: B carburetor fuel starvation
Snyders now have the conventional needle and seat for the B carb B-9564-OR, I have had that same problem with the Gross jet, can be a serious problem depending when the engine stops running.

Re: B carburetor fuel starvation
We've had same problem with grosejet valves. Renners suggests to blow thru them to test if they leak air, etc. We try to find the viton tipped original style. Also, sometimes float levels are too low and starve the carbs for fuel when on steep upgrades.

Re: B carburetor fuel starvation
Do you have the "B" carb set up to runoff the fuel pump with the tiiny spring on the float?

Re: B carburetor fuel starvation
There is a look alike groose jet valve that does not pass enough fuel for high speed runs, or pulling a hill.
Stipe machine works makes and sells a good ball style valve. http://www.stipemachine.com/

May be that is the problem. The ball type float valve I took out was very small in the fuel passage. I thought there was only one manufacturer of the ball type valve. May be the one I had was something that came from China and was poorly done as so many other parts from China I have encountered. Thanks for the info. Chris W. |
