cantancerous cutout
My repop cutout points don't weld together, they make contact when ever they feel like it. I've cleaned them and filed and polished. They will charge sometimes and other times not. What the heck!

Re: cantancerous cutout
Yep, either use a good diode cutout or a restored original from Bert's. 800-321-1931
I only use original cutouts. |

Re: cantancerous cutout
You can try to adjust the points gap a bit closer. A diode would solve the problem.

Re: cantancerous cutout
Get another one, open it up and restore it. Easy job.

Re: cantancerous cutout
A diode is also good insurance to protect the generator in case the battery becomes fully charged when driving a long distance.
I remember, when I was a young man, my dad would turn on the lights on the Ford if we were on a long drive so the battery would not become fully charged and burn out the generator. I convert all my cutouts to positive ground diode. Ron |

Re: cantancerous cutout
Oh, A diode will prevent the battery from being overcharged? I did not know that.

Re: cantancerous cutout
The cutout is to prevent burning up the generator when the engine is off by disconnecting it from the battery. Charging is regulated by the position of the third brush. Rod

Re: cantancerous cutout
A diode would solve the problem. However It is not a voltage regulator! You will still need to monitor your charge, yes you can turn your lights on after a bit to help regulate the charge. You can also add an internal regulator under the removable cover of your stock generator. I have one in each of my stock cars, it's out of sight so if your showing it will not knock off points, unless they disassemble your generator.
