31 S/W door hinge pins worn
I removed the 2 right front door hinge pins because of looseness in the hinge. The body is at paint now so the complete hinge sets were removed. I was able to press one pin out using heat & the "C" style pin removal tool. The other pin would not move so I had to drill the center of the pin out & then use a drift punch & hammer.
I have looked at a lot of the post on pins here but still have a few questions. I can get new pins made up at my friends machine shop. The top & bottom hinge holes are still tight on the pins. The center hole is worn & out of round. I saw a post here about a bushing for the hole that was sold on ebay but can't find it now. I also want to install rear view hinge mirrors on both sides. 1. Anyone know anything about the replacement bushing & will it work on Slant window hinges? 2. How much bigger should the center hole dia be then the pin. The pin I removed was .280 dia? 3. How long should the pin be for the mirrors? 4. Should I make the pins out of stainless.? |

I rebushed the holes using brake or fuel line I had laying around. Drilled the hole oversized and chamfered both ends. Inserted the tubing and pushed out the ends into the chamfer. The drilled to diameter.
You will also need to add some shims to lift the door up. It is likely there is wear on the face. Mine had enough that it did not line up properly. Been quite a while so do not ask for more details. I am using repro pins. |

I make them on my lathe and stainless is a great option. Just drill the hinge with a Letter drill bit and match the pin to that size.

Re: 31 S/W door hinge pins worn
I got a piece of 3/8 steel tubing from work yesterday to try making a bushing. Want to try in a piece of scrap steel before drilling hinge. Drilled 3/8 hole in steel & tried the bushing. Had a light press fit so I put some Loctite bearing retainer on the bushing & pushed it in. Then opened ID with a #K (.281) drill. Was a little tight on the pin so I opened the hole with an adjustable reamer until pin would turn by hand.
I think I will knurl the OD of bushing before putting into hinge. |
