Oil fill cap questions
I am still breaking in my rebuilt A motor. After a short drive, I recently noticed a "mist" of dirty oil/dust below my oil fill cap. I cleaned it off with a few paper towels and pulled the cap off. To my surprise there was nothing but a clear air pathway through the cap. Is there normally some filtering media inside the cap? The oil level is full and looks clean/new on the dip stick.
Anyhow, I subsequently stuffed some stainless steel pot scrubbing pad material in the fill cap, thinking this might reduce the mist that apparently has been exiting the fill tube. It fits securely and will not fall out. Good idea or bad? Thanks for your thoughts. |

Re: Oil fill cap questions
I would not use any type of metal material in the tube. Any pieces that come loose go right inside your engine and will probably go places you don't want it to.
A bit of mist around the cap is not terribly unusual. Perhaps it will lessen when the rings get seated well. If your oil level it right up to the full mark it may mist a bit more than if the oil level is kept halfway between the full and low mark on the dip stick. Quite a few keep their oil level at the halfway mark.

Re: Oil fill cap questions
The oil fill tube is supposed to have 3 baffles in it to deter blowby. There were a few changes made during production to make it more efficient.
