Default X's on the engine number???

Sometimes I see Model A's with a thin "X" over or under the digits of the engine numbers. I can't tell if the thin X's are stamped over the digits or if the digits are stamped over the X's, but the digits were still clearly visible.

Does anyone know why? Or know what this means?

Maybe a rebuilder did this when the engine went in different car? On mine the engine number has been milled off and has the numbers 691946. I take this to be a rebuilders date of June 9th 1946. Yes that means I'm cruising a 67 year old rebuild

Soon I'll fire my 1987 rebuild, that has "maybe" 40 miles on it!
Rebuilder's placque says, .010 overbore-----When installing modern head gasket, found it to be .100 overbore!---Sumbody DIDN'T know their DECIMALS!

I have permission to take a picture of one as long as I don't reveal the complete engine number. I'll get a chance to do it in a few days.

Re-builder.....Different car? Sounds very possible. Thanks.

I'll get a picture posted later sometime soon.

Definitely sounds like the engine was replaced and number changed to match the original.

I've seen where it was stamped from the factory with an X. I was told it was where the guy on the line stamped the wrong number. An X was stamped over it and the correct number stamped next to it. Also seen it done on the frame number. Makes sence to me. The line worker gets in a hurry and accidentally grabs the wrong stamp.

WRONG STAMP, that's FUNNY, Arlen!! Once my Mamma was mailing Christmas cards & was 1 stamp short. She pondered, "Who do I like the LEAST"?----She put 2 S&H Green Stamps on it, & it NEVER got returned After that, she always felt GUILTY, when buyin' stamps Bill W.

I saw in one of my engines a series of numbers in different parts, for example in the cylinder head number 26 and the valve cover another number ...
I have another engine with the prefix AF ...

Ratamahata: "AF" deals with cars built rhd. I read somewhere it was for cars built in England for export but could be wrong.
