In reference to a previous thread regarding X8 Engine
eli apolzon <[email protected]>
In 2006, this man was selling an X8 engine to help with the hospital expenses of his daughter. These pictures are of an actual X8 engine not just an engine designated with an X number. |

No, An 8 cylinder engine Ford designed at the same time he designed the V/8. I expect he was trying to compete with other in line 6 and 8 cylinder engines yet keep it shorter and as or more powerful.

Interesting! Note the cylinders are integral to the crankcase halves, not bolted to it like an airplane radial.

Re: In reference to a previous thread regarding X8 Engine
There was a Ford X8 engine on display in Henry Fords Fairlane home when I visited there in 2003. It was in the basement. Exactly the same as in those pictures. Henry tested several out fitted to model A cars and I think the bottom cylinders overheated because of accumulated dirt getting on the lower cylinders and restricting air flow. Regards, Kevin.

Re: In reference to a previous thread regarding X8 Engine
Rotary engines were used in WW1 aircraft and comprised of cylinders and crankcase which rotated around a stationary crankshaft. Radial engines were the opposite where the crankshaft rotated and the cylinders and crankcase remained stationary. The Ford X8 is like a radial engine, cylinders and crankcase stationary and the two flywheel come cooling fans rotated. The internal gear drive in the centre of one flywheel drove the transmission. Regards, Kevin.

Just think, if Henry succeeded with that motor and produced 12 million of them, we'd have an x8 forum instead
