Default Modern upper plate

Put a modern upper plate in my 31 today, ran for two hours ,almost didn't get home as it was missing badly, found condenser was bad after only two hours run time. Mabey I should have stuck with the old upper plate. Anyone else have this trouble ?

The new condensers are having problems with quality control and the guys on the Mustang boards have complained about them. They are bought in bulk from China.

Hey, you buy them in some of the parts stores.

The original style burnout proof from A&L is what everyone really wants to run. They seem to just keep in going and going.

So why did you feel the need to change from the ultra reliable original points?

Properly rebuilt you can expect tens of years on the original system and the same set of points.

If you do a search you will find a lot of problems have been reported.

Mine lasted about 30 minutes . Almost tore into the carburator before I came to my senses and changed out the condenser with one from NAPA. Also changed out cheapy points for points from NAPA. Runs like a top .

The good points and condensers from NAPA are way way more expensive than good original style points and condensers from Brattons, Snyders and other good venders. The points and condensers that NAPA offered me was the same junk that the model A venders sell. I've been told that NAPA has good points for around thirty dollars. The modern set up is difficult to adjust, wasn't designed for the model A and I can see no advantage. The modern setups that I've seen and struggled to use have the points at a slightly different location. Usually the timing has to be tweaked a few times to find a happy medium.

I have had good results with Accel Points and Condensor. (Accel part # 8201) I get them from Summit Racing.

The new 'modern' plate set-up is suppose to be good. Like others mentioned, some points/condeners are junk. NAPA does have good ones but you'll pay for them.

I have had some problems with NAPA condensers in my 29 as well, but have ran the 31 for three years with no problems,I'm thinking of changing them both back to stock.

Here is a post I made 3 years ago and posted on the old Ford Barn prior to May 2010.

The problem might be the lower plate and not the condensers.

Re: Vrooom ... dadadada .... vroom .... dadada

Does the car have a modern upper plate with condensor on upper plate or have a condensor mounted somewhere else other than stock?

If so remove upper plate and look closely at the lower plate where the condenser screw is normally fastened to the lower plate.

You might find that the far end of the plate is shorting on the inside of the distributor housing.

This can be a VERY INTERMITTENT problem, mine went on for some time until finally enough paint was rubbed off that the problem went "solid" enough that I found it.

The modern upper plate kit I bought several years ago came with USA made Autolite points and condenser. I nver installed it as the direction of the project I had at that time changed. I still have the stuff put up, but not likely I will ever use it. Rod
