Ford-holley 94 model 59

I'm working on a friend's 34 Ford. I had the carb rebuilt. It runs very well but when you step on the brake easy or hard, about the same time the car stops the motor dies. Hit the starter and it restarts. I run the idle up fairly high( lot higher than it should be) and it helps but don't fix the problem.
What are we doing wrong?

The clutch may be dragging slightly. Is it properly adjusted?

The coil could be shorting out, try changing it.

Stock brakes or some powerbrake setup ?
Does it stall if you press the brake standing still ?
In gear or in neutral ?
Trying to narrow it down...

I guess you guys can't understand Texas lingo. Let me try again. When braking to a stop, the gas either shuts down, leans out, or shuts off killing the engine. Or, maybe it causes the carb to dump too much gas and floods it out. It is the carburetor, I'm sure but can't (or haven't) found the fix.

Perhap, as you "had the carburetor rebuilt", you lack the basic knowledge required to set up and adjust your rebuilt carburetor. Simply rebuilding a carb doesn't always mean that it is ready to run. There are a number of variables to set and adjust on any carburetor for optimum performance on a particular engine. Your most likely problem is that you failed to adjust the idle jets, and you are trying to compensate by raising the idle speed. This would be a required first adjustment upon firing up the engine, long before the wheels touched the highway.

Remove the air horn and flip it up side down. The dimension from the gasket
face of the air horn to the top of the float should be 1.350 ( a tad less than 1 3/8 ).
Once the setting is verified reinstall the air horn and restart the motor. Once she's
warmed up back each idle screw out a turn or two........then one at a time turn
each screw in until the motor stumbles slightly then back it out 1/2 turn. You'll have
to try this maybe twice, you'll get the knack. This will get you real real close to where
you need to be. 45 minutes tops including warm up time. Go for a ride and report
back. Only my opinion.

so the car is moving, then you let off the gas and it's still running....but you hit the brakes in any fashion and the engine stops....have i got the situation correct??.....it only dies when you touch the brakes??.....even just touch while the car is still rolling??.....does the engine die when car is not moving, but you hit the brakes?? could be brake light switch but who knows?....Mike

The internal winding of the coil is loose and when you brake the winding swings foward
and shorts out on the body of the coil cutting spark to the engine. When you have finished playing around with the carb, change the coil and see what happens.
