And. the pre-mix is made with distilled water...which we are all supposed to use, but almost nobody does, since the green garden hose is so convenient.

One of the most important reasons to not use pure antifreeze is FIRE, pure antifreeze will burn.

I hope you haven't been buying the 50/50 premixed and then adding 50% water, which would reduce it to 25% antifreeze.

As been said it does but you'll save money buying 100% and not 50% (50/50) and mixing it yourself.

not really i pay cheaper from my supplier buying 50 /50 in bulk drums then straight.. figuring the cost difference mixing vs a drum of straight i am paying a little less going this route. the public is getting scammed on the 50/50 price in the stores...

No actually I've been buying the 100% anti freeze and runnig it un-dilluted, thinking that it would be least likely to freeze. Now after reading this post, i've learned something.

The boiling point is irrelevant for cars. What is important is the heat transfer coefficient. It is much lower for anti-freeze than for water.

I buy the straight stuff and mix it half and half. It ain't difficult. In fact if you live in southern climates I would be inclined to mix to 1-3, should be good to 0 degree(s).
Now mixing oil in the gas for a two stroke.....That's math!

looking at the back panel of a gallon of Prestone I purchased yesterday, it shows 50/50 mix with water -34 F , mix 70% Prestone 30% water protection is -84 F, strange that when the concentration is 70% the freeze point goes down to -84, you would think a 100% antifreeze would be lower, but not so from what I just read..
Also at Walmart 7-20-15 50/50 Prestone was $8.97 and 100% was $12.97, at the Salem VA store. With that kind of savings I'll mix my own. I use distilled water out of my dehumidifier

I've always bought the straight stuff in barrels. The jobber I get it from told me they won't try to stock pre-mix.The difference in price was very little, and the rep said he didn't want to try to sell a half barrel of water to Yankees for almost the same price as anti-freeze.I keep my barrel outside in an unheated shed,I have since the 70's and they've never frozen. It just comes out of the pump a little more syrupy than it does in the summer.I used to work for a fellow that ran a lot of Macks. He had me protect them down to zero.He felt that water cooled them better, and at zero the coolant would still circulate.Taking them down to 10 or 15 above would let them slush up a little when running.

The Detroit Diesel Chart is very close to what The Chemistry Institute information I found that Google had listed.
The heat transfer coefficient is unrelated to my reply as EVERYONE who posted has said not to use Ethylene Glycol straight as a coolant for about twenty good reasons from economics to cooling efficiency.

Boiling point is, however, still very important as that is when coolant comes bubbling out of the radiator when hot, regardless of its heat transfer coefficient.
