Put a clamp around the hose where the stat is.

Use something in the hose as mentioned to hold the stat versus an unsightly clamp

I drove Minerva about 12,000 miles with a 160 Degree, sleeved thermostat in the UPPER end of the UPPER hose & it worked PERFECT! HEAT GOES UP!
