1/8" end play on rear axle too much?
When I say end play I mean up/down/back/forth and not in and out of the axle housing.
What are the tolerances for rear axle end play? What is too much? Wouldn't any end play mess with centering the brake shoes? I installed Flat Head Ted's but still, I would think any end play would create contact with the shoes, or do you center the shoes with the axle being pushed up? Pepe |

OK, so you have radial play, and yes, 1/8" is too much and will mess up th brake action. You may need a sleeve on the axle tube, or a new hub and bearing. I'd remove the hub and measure the axle tube both in a horizontal position, and in a vertical position. Let us know the readings.

1/8"?? Not an expert by any means but I would venture to say you should have next to nothing play since it rides in a bearing.

If you are measuring with the drum off then 1/8" is normal, the hub
and bearing is what holds the axle in place. If it's 1/8" with the drum installed then yes it's to much. Bob |

If you are checking this with the hub removed then what you have is normal . The only thing locating the axle end is the seal which is just inboard of the axle housing end . The seal is pliable and will allow up/down and sideways movement . There should be minimal in /out movement .This is dictated by how much wear there is in the diff carrier and spider gears
John in sunshine and showers, Suffolk County England PS - Just checked freshly rebuilt axle and 1/8th inch up and down is perfectly fine |

Go deeper, or IMHO, run it unless you are rebuilding the drive train.
Tom Endy's proceedures for rebuilding are the best set of instructions. An occasional driver is one scenario that gives you time to decide how you want to proceed. A rebuild is one area where 2 heads are better than one. Bob |

when the axle is bolted to the hub with the outside nut it is held center and tight as long as the hub bearing and race on the diff are in good shape..

Re: 1/8" end play on rear axle too much?
My misread of PEPE's description. The rear axle floats and the rear seal is not ridgid.
Never mind my comments. Run it. Bob |
