Re: Nazi stop.
That is actually a staged photo by the famous documentary journalist Cornelius Vanderbilt IV who is shown in this photo (standing next to the German soldier) when, in 1933, he recreated the search of his car by the German authorities as he crossed the border from Germany back into France. He recreated that scene to incorporate it into his 1934 anti-Nazi movie titled "Hitler's Reign of Terror".....which apparently was the first ever American anti-Nazi film. The scene show a German border guard (soldier in uniform) watching while a German customs police officer searches Vanderbilt's 1931 Ford Model A, looking for any movie films (or other contraband) hidden in the car. The car is a 1931 slant windshield Ford Model A Cabriolet (68C) with French license plates. Vanderbilt brought the 68C from the US and registered it in France upon his arrival in Europe (his first destination in Europe was Paris). (Note that the 68C's were only available in Europe from Ford in The Netherlands.) The "Hitler's Reign of Terror" movie is apparently not available for viewing in full online, but there is an interesting clip from the movie which shows this recreated scene where Vanderbilt is stopped at the border for a documents and vehicle inspection: https://videos-cloudfront-usp.jwpsrv...g=1175712.m3u8 The movie scene from whence the photo was taken can be seen starting at minute 0:53, but best to listen from the beginning to fully understand the context of the photo. More information about the "Hitler's Reign of Terror" documentary movie can be found on Wikipedia at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler...eign_of_Terror Brad in Maryland Last edited by Brad in Germany; 07-21-2023 at 04:11 AM. |

Re: Nazi stop.
Brad - Outstanding! I’m both a history buff and movie buff. The 1930’s and 1940’s provide a wealth of information showing the evolution of the automobile’s role and interactions with people. The Ford (Henry, Edsel, Clara, the company, technology, business, the war, society, and on and on) saga is deeply intertwined.
