Clutch finger adjustment in car
Has anyone made a You Tube of adjusting clutch fingers with the clutch in the car? Like to see how it's done before I try it. I was hoping Jack Bahm had done this, but I can't find it. Anybody seen one.

Re: Clutch finger adjustment in car
I have done several cars, the clutches failed more or less suddenly and it was obvious (particularly after looking at them) that one or more clutch finger adjustments were never done during a clutch replacement or there were loose or lost nuts. I made a go/nogo gauge from appropriately bent wire ground to the clearance of fingers that were normal and used that to adjust the failed ones. Takes about an hour; doing a video takes ??? hours?

Re: Clutch finger adjustment in car
I did that in my coupe, using a combination square, which allowed me to set the depth at 5/8" and position it over the fingers for adjustment. The hardest part was securing the nuts after adjustment, making sure they were in fact secured. In the car, it’s a clumsy job no matter what.

Re: Clutch finger adjustment in car
This is on my list of chores and I'll make a video when I do it. I have a borescope that'll probably come in handy, it's tight quarters in there.

Re: Clutch finger adjustment in car
Its hard to set the height while still in the car, but, the fingers can be adjusted equal if the pedal height and operation seem good except for a chatter.
All I do is push the release bearing and notice which finger it contacts first and mark it. Then I set a .0015" feeler strip between each finger and the bearing face and adjust accordingly [ until there is a slight drag]. When done push the pedal a few times to settle the fingers and check everything again. |

Re: Clutch finger adjustment in car
I have adjusted the fingers on a 9” in a V8. Yes, it is close, but I tied a line to the open end wrench to retrieve it in the event that it got dropped. Did not want to pull the transmission.
