Horn Relay Problem?
My horn on my '49 Ford will not work. I removed the horn ring and grounded the wire to the nut on the steering wheel. I can hear the relay click when I ground the wire out. Its not very loud but horns do not work. I have not had any experience with horn relays. Could the relay click and not sound the horn??? The relay is under the convertible top pump and the air vent, so it not going to be easy to replace, I can barely see it......Any ideas??

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
Check the wire from the relay to the horn to see if it is connected properly - both ends of the wire. Check for continuity of this wire....

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
The horn relay on my '51 coupe is on the firewall where it's easy to get at. I know there's a couple of years difference and they are different body styles, but still.....

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
Have you run a hot wire to the horns to see if the horns work?-

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
If as you say, you can hear it clicking, then it sounds like time to remove and replace or inspect and correct.
The cover can be removed to inspect the contact points for proper operation and possible build up of material preventing electrical flow.

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
I am not familiar with 49s, but the wiring routing diagram shows the horn relay on the firewall. It is base part 13853. Unless they are mounted in a different location on the convertibles, it should be on the firewall.

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
Ok, shows what I know about 49s! I didn't know the pump was on the firewall. Thanks 51 Merc.

Re: Horn Relay Problem?
If it wasn't a convertible the relay would be on the firewall just like my '50 Tudor. The pump and motor is right where the relay would have been on a sedan. It isn't under the pump, its kind of beside it. The vent is right over the top of it......I'm pretty sure the horns work but I'll check with a jumper wire from the battery. A relay isn't to costly but will some work to get it of & on.
Thanks for the help...... |
