Default Stuck Starter Help

My brother-in-law just got a '49 v-8 tudor. Had the starter locked-up the other day They put the car in 3rd gear and rocked it and it got it out and it started. What can cause this? Does the starter need work or what???

Thanks in Advance

either a bad bendix , a bent starter drive,or worn bushing at the starter shaft, you may have to pull the starter and check it for these problems, could even be a really worn ring gear on the flywheel
