Question 46 Ford Super Deluxe Door Locks

Picked up a 46 Super Deluxe which does not have locking doors. Does anyone make a door lock kit for this car? Thanks! Kevin

All '46 Fords had door locks. The locks should be just below the outside door handles.

Does it have remote control locks? It is someone common to remove the mechanical locks and install solenoids when customizing a car. They also often have a cable backup installed to some hidden location.

Seems odd someone would fill the original locks without a backup system of some sort.

Do you have the original door handle inside the car? If so move the handle in the opposite direction of opening so see if the door will lock. if it does you may want to remove the outer skin and the the exterior locks on the outside.

Also, it seems unnecessary to go to a body shop. Pull the door panel, find the filled hole. If you are lucky it's just bondoed over and will drill out easily. Does your car have the original latches or did someone "upgrade" it with bear claws or something?

The key is about 3.75" below the handle mounding. And, the interior handles will lock the doors from the inside. As Stud said above, I'd start by pulling the door panel and see how a PO might have filled the key mechanism.

You could lock it, but how would you unlock it? That's why I would assume some type of unlock provision. Would be a pain when it get accidentally locked if not!

Keep the window down when testing the inside handles as a locking mechanism. (the inside handles both lock and unlock) Agree with you, JSeery, sounds like this "body work" was done back in the old CarCraft days of filled and decked. Yes, as was the case with remotes, there should be an emergency release cable hidden in there somewhere!!

I lot of guys I knew "back in the day" shaved the door locks AND handles. It was almost as popular as "nosing and decking". They removed the locking mechanism on the vent window on one of the front doors so they could just push it in, reach inside, and open the door. When you pushed the vent window shut, it was pretty hard to tell it was not locked unless you knew what to look for.

Tubman, that vent window trick is very cool!!! Wish I'd thought of it on some of my attempts at "customizing" some of my rides back in the late 50's when I was really into some of those projects!!

On the '46, the vents crank out, so doing this would require additional surgery!

Does your car have power windows with a remote for the windows? If it does maybe the car can be locked if the original latches are in the doors. Original latches allow you to pull up on the interior hands to lock the doors. You can pull up the handles when the windows are down and then roll up the windows with the remote.
