Restoration Guidelines - 32 Vicky Window/dash moldings

Hi,

I am wondering if there is anything like the MARC/MAFCA model A Fords Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines for the early V8s ? I can see the attached book front page on the web, where it is stated to be published by the Early Ford V8 Club of America. However I cannot find this book for sale on the club web pages.

Now to the actual question which I need answered just now. What is the original woodgraining for a 1932 Victoria dash and window moldings ?

I can see from the model A Judging standards that the Vicky had "Mahogany" woodgrain the year before. Would it by chance be the same for 1932, and would the grain base color and pattern also be the same ?

If you look on the Early Ford V8 Club web site (and other outlets to like here in the SWAP Meet section and or Ebay) you will find the EFV8 Club 32 Ford restoration books (2) which is a "FINE" publication that will tell you what you want to know!!! DavidG here on the "Barn" is the one who put together this magnificent work and will surly impart his wisdom and expertise.

The Early Ford V8 Club gave away those 1981 40-page "booklets" when the new two-volume 600+ page "The 1932 Ford Book, A Production Chronicle and Restoration Guide" was published in 2008. I'm surprised that there are any of that first attempt are still around to sell. It doesn't contain the answers to the questions posed by eystein above, but the 2008 version along with the two addendum on the Club website certainly do.

As rockfla indicates, the 2008 version is available on the Club website (earlyfordv8.org) via the online store link in the left hand column of the home page.

The North American '32 deluxe passenger car wood grains are quite different from any used during the Model A era. Is your '32 Victoria an early production version or later? I ask as the pattern on the front belt rail finish panel (dash) changed from what it was initially. The grains used were walnut and ranged from burl grain to straight grain depending on the component being grained. The base color, a medium red, remained the same throughout the model year.


I'll post some photos of surviving original examples later today.

It is not my car, but that of a club member enquiring to see if I could do the woodgraining for him. Therefore, I am not too keen on buying the books myself, but I will definitely recommend to the owner to do so.

I was hoping that the grain would be mahogany, as that is what I did for my Model A. Anyway, I do also have one of the grain-it-technologies pattern plates for Walnut, however your answer indicates that there may be two different patterns for the dash and window moldings.

Photos of some original samples would be most welcome !

Here's some photos of original '32 wood grains. The first two are of a dash from an early production Victoria with burl grain along the upper portion and straight grain on the lower portion. The second photo is of the back of that dash giving you and idea of the color of the base coat. The third is of the dash in a later production sedan. The fourth is of the straight grain on the window moldings of a sedan.

David, would the victoria have straight grain like on the sedan on the window moldings all year, or would there be a difference between early and late also for the window moldings?

Looks to me that the straight grain on the window moldings and early dash would be fairly well replicated with the pattern that grain-it-technologies call «straight grain». Seems to be very similar to the «stipple mahogany» pattern that I used for my 30’ 68-B only with a few heavier lines breaking up the fine-line pattern.

There is nothing unique-to-'32 Victorias when it comes to the wood grain. It is the same for all '32 deluxe body types except for the deluxe coupe where it was originally unique to that body type. So, yes, straight grain on the window moldings throughout the model year and yes, it is very similar to that in your photo of your 68-B.

Yes highly recommended to any early ford owner and learn from the book consistently. Plus we use it for reference and identification on 1932 ford parts . Thank you DavidG for doing a outstanding thorough job on the book
