Default Hooking Up Cable To Speedometer Changer

While hooking up a Columbia, I am wondering what the proper installation is for the cable that attaches to the thin control lever on the changer. Does the spring go above or below the thin lever? How do you adjust it? The Columbia instructions don't go into any detail. Thanks!

Hi Philip,

There are springs above and below the thin lever. Pic of mine attached with information on the spring wire and pitch I used. Other pic is from Columbia diagram.

Thanks Glen, that's kinda what I thought. I only got one spring with my new cable but found an automatic transmission spring that is very close. Aren't you supposed to have two nuts on the end of the cable fitting to act as jam nuts to keep it from backing off? I did get two nuts with mine. Thanks for the picture and the help!

Is there an easy way to ensure it's adjusted right?

Hi Phil,

Use thin gauge wire with a few turns for the springs you use. They hold a little force on the lever to keep it from moving out of position, that's all. I only had one nut on mine and no springs! The spring keep a little force on the nut. Mine doesn't loosen but two is a good idea.

No springs, the speedometer doesn't work so that's the test ;-)

Hi Phil,

Make sure you have lube in your changer. Split the case carefully and you may be able to save the gasket. I put corn head grease in mine.

Thanks Glenn,

The changer is new so it already was packed with a white grease.
