Default 8BA cooling system drain

The 8RT block has an area just inside the lower section of the water pump. See photo. This area accumulates debris and you cannot drain all the water out of the block because of it. Anyone drill and tap this area for a block drain ? Thank you Fordbarners.

There is a hole next to the lower pump bolt (plugged w/sediment in your pics) that lines up with a hole in the pump that drains that area into the lower hose.

I have a 59 block that has threaded holes in the side of the block there that can accept a plug or a drain petcock.

That's the problem. The hole clogs and that side of the block will not drain. I see no problem with drilling and tapping for a drain on the outside of the block.

Thank you Fordbarners. I saw the plugged hole, and cleaned it out. It should drain fine out of there, as it is the lowest place in the front of the block. Just have to remember to clean it out regularly

The advantage of installing a drain to the outside is that if it plugs with sediment you can run a probe in to break it loose without having to remove radiator hoses.

I can't say on the older cars, but on all the 48-52 trucks the engine leans back at a 3 - 4 degree angle, so the low point is at the rear of the block. The blocks accumulate a lot of crap back there, I think a drain back there would be useful. I don't know if the water jacket wall is thick enough there for an NPT to seat well, tho.

drilled and tapped both sides of my block in my 51 merc. and installed drain cocks, works good. best to do when the eng. is out of vehicle, other wise not enough room to do it. depending on vehicle they can be hard to get and use
