Ford and Mercury engines were IDENTICAL....both came out of the same pile....1946-1948. Even the SERIAL numbers.....showed NO differentiation between Fords and Mercs '46-'48 because of that! DD

Thanks Coop.
The owner insists that the original engine was bronze.
I’m putting in an 8ba that was painted black. Gonna paint it Ford 28 to 48 Ford green.
The rest of the car is in excellent condition. Black coupe, is converted to 12 volts and has a wrong license plate light and license plate mounted on the bumper.

The dark blue color was how they could tell it was a 239 after they stopped stamping the 99A Mercury blocks. It was used up into the 8BA era for a while. The 8BA family of blocks had various colors depending on the year and CID. Bronze as one of them. Red was also used for trucks. Mercury 255 CID engines and some later trucks used a light green color.

I read the post wrong and was talking about Ford engines. I see you are asking about Merc.

My dad bought a brand new ‘47 Ford, later I bought two used ‘46 Fords and I took over my brother’s 47. I don’t remember what color any of the engines were.
I suppose they were all blue.
I know a ‘49 would be blue. And ‘51 trucks were red but ‘52 trucks were a light green but the cars were not. I think it was 1950 that could be two different colors.
Also I might mention, for example, in 51 the truck engines were red. That means all truck engines, the V8s and both six cylinder. Same for the cars, whatever color the V8 was all were that color, sixes and eights.

The V8 Ford & Mercury used the same engine after the war till the 8BA /8CM family came along. Same engine, same color so it makes no difference in those years. Since there was only the one size 6-cylinder for cars in those years then it didn't matter what color is was.

Ford didn't start stylizing their engine compartments till the 50s. The bronze color was a big change when it came along.

AND, that has to be a LATE '49 Engine. The early engines weren't that color.

Did the intake manifolds come from factory the color of the block?

This picture should answer that question. These are obviously the later ('49-'53) flatheads. Notice NO spark plugs, and the oddball contraptions bolted to the rears (bottoms) of the blocks. I believe these engines are either headed TO, or FROM the huge stands where dozens of new engines were mounted and connected with huge electric motors which ran the rotating assemblies up to speed to help in a rudimentary, initial 'break-in' process. DD

This is from The 1949-50-51 FORD Book published by the EFV8 Club.

"The early 1949 engines were finished in the same manner as the engines were on the 1948 models. The engine was blue and most accessories were either natural finish or painted black. Starting sometime in the 1949 model year, all engines were painted bronze AFTER major assembly The block, heads, manifolds, water pumps, front cover, bell housing, and oil pan were all painted as an assembled unit."
It goes on to list the colors/finishes of the added on parts for each of the years. A good book to have if you're restoring to "original".

To answer the original question.
'42 thru '48 Mercury engines were dark blue.
'46 thru early '49 Ford passenger car engines were dark blue.
Strange how these posts go sideways.

Interesting that the starter and manifolds were painted with the assembly. Great picture. Thanks
