Find the right machinist and it can be laced.

Re: Repairable or Garden Art ????
The way I have seen it done was to find the end of the crack and drill it then install a threaded iron plug that's tapered. Then drill another hole overlapping the first plug, keep repeating this process the length of the crack. I bet your block can be saved by this method and installing a sleeve in that cylinder and a new seat. I would pull the valve and guide out to see if the crack runs down into the guide hole, it might just be under the seat which would be a good thing. The further it goes in the guide hole it makes it harder to repair.

Re: Repairable or Garden Art ????
Ken has it exactly correct , I have fixed several cracked the same as yours . If it has a valve seat remove it first the crack s usually go down into the port also just pin it from one end of crack to the other , cut & install new seat , then bore & install sleeve in cylinder. Been away too long , so not sure who in CHCH will do this for you , but Blacklows in Ashburton can handle it . The drilling & pining is really easy to do , its like a pipe thread & as the plugs get tight enough they break off & then you drill the next hole intersecting the last plug.

Re: Repairable or Garden Art ????
This pinning is ok but not a true stitch. The tapered plugs can spread the crack. Usually locks are put in every so often to keep the crack from opening.
Look in the third picture to see what I am referring to. This was most likely done by Frank Casey of Millbury Ma. He has all kinds of drills and tooling to get into places no one thought possible. Makes his own pins and locks. One man operation out of his cellar. Pressure tests all repairs. http://www.jandm-machine.com/metalStitching.html

Re: Repairable or Garden Art ????
There are different pins, some are tapered.. some have straight threads, some have hooked threads and pull the crack together ---then there are locks ---

Fairlane, i think "laced" is meant the same as "stitched", as discussed.....good luck....doesn't look too bad, and i hope it can be repaired....Mike

Re: Repairable or Garden Art ????
If done right there is no need to sleeve the bolck. Have had several done by Frank Casey of mass. Depending on how far down the cylinder the crack goes.
