Front Cross Member Question
The front cross member on the frame of my newly-acquired ‘29 sport coupe project is not riveted, but bolted- and not all the bolts are apparently there. As I recall, these frame members were all riveted, weren’t they ??
Thanks - Jim |

Re: Front Cross Member Question
It is probably a replacement. The owner used bolts instead of rivets.
If all the bolts are there it would be easier just to use it. Replace missing bots and check all for tight. If you decided to rivet you may find holes were drilled larger for bolts. I have a friend that has driven for several years with bolted x member. John

Re: Front Cross Member Question
Thanks for all the responses. I’ll keep this crossmember, as it’s in very good shape. I will put the missing bolts in. I’d like to find good quality carriage bolts for the holes on top of the frame- any suggestions ?
Thanks - Jim |

Re: Front Cross Member Question
Carriage bolts won’t get it
Frame needs to be flush so fenders will lay flat Flat head machine screws with nuts underneath as a minimum |

Re: Front Cross Member Question
Contact Bolt Depot in MA. You can get the six necessary 1/4" recessed bolts that will be flush with the top of frame including the other 8 bolts for the sides and bottoms of the frame in #8.

Thanks to everyone - I did find grade 8 bolts at McMaster-Carr and the Bolt Depot.

Re: Front Cross Member Question
My Coupe has 50,000 miles on a bolted-in front crossmember. However the bolts are line fit into their holes for excellent shear, and the bolts are a high tensile strength for tension. There are not gaps between the crossmember and frame rails.
If you rivet the crossmember, the rivets must fill their holes.

Re: Front Cross Member Question
Thanks, grade 8 would make more sense than #8
