Default spare tire cover 36 fill material

Hello Guys
I may have rounded up a good 36 spare tire cover through a recent wanted add in the Barn and would like to have some input about filling the space where the tire and wheel went. i am hoping someone has used light weight styrofoam in place of the wheel & tire. I believe a valve stem can be mocked up along with say an 8" piece of exposed tire below. Any ideas here would be appreciated as i see no reason for a heavy tire back there to deal with.

You are kidding us, right? Just mount the spare wheel/tire in there and it will be all correct. And the bonus is if you get a puncture then you can use the spare. Cheeee !!!

Why not carry a real spare? Flat tires do happen and usually when you are not near a place where they can be fixed. I don't understand why you want it to look like a spare, but not be useable?

I have a real tire and wheel from sometime after 1936 in mine, it holds air for a day or two and it "fills" the cover just fine, YMMV

PS I cant use the original wide 5 wheel anymore since the prev owner converted to 5x5.5 so its just like you say a good cover filler.

Ahhh those heavy spare tires making me go slow with all that extra weight. My 36 has a real spare tire there. What would be the point otherwise. I'd venture to guess leaving it off would be more beneficial to air drag if you are worried about speed.


But I guess anything can happen over time. I'd just get an original wheel and tire and put helium in the tire to lighten the weight.

If your adamant about having a faux spare, I've never done so but maybe work? Fill a tire tube with minimal or low expanding foam. Use the nozzle from an old tire slime patch bottle so it has the straw with threaded end to screw on the valve stem. You may need to poke a few holes in the tube to allow the air to escape and allow for better curing. Fill to desired size, minimal expanding foam is key so it doesn't double in size while drying.

Secondly you could just spray on expanding foam in layers onto the rim, letting dry between layers. Then shave to desired shape.

Realistically, the time and mess you may be in for, the real deal is probably your best option. If cost is your concern and you don't care to use it if needed, pick up an old scrap tire from your local scrap yard or back field.

Use the spare tire mount from a '35 and you can install the 5 on 5.5 wheel

When I converted my '36 to hydraulic brakes in 1952 using donor parts from a '41, including the '41 wheels I went to a wrecking yard and got a tire mount from a '35 coupe.. Pretty simple... Note the tire mounts are body style specific, ie; coupe to coupe, trunk back to trunk back, etc.
Of course the use of '41 wheels on the car meant that the spare tire cover would not lock to the '35 mount so I eliminated the cover lock.
When I decided to go back to stock wheels/hubcaps on the the '36 in 1961 I replaced the '35 mount with a correct '36 mount.
Since my car is a Aug 36 car it has the rare August tire cover, different center in lieu of the hubcap looking common cover.
It took me several years to find a '36 tire mount for a coupe that had the extension for the lock.
