Default Worn Out of Patience

HELP! What is the remedy for my problematic Ford?

My 1947 Sportsman starts fine when the engine has not been running. After the engine reaches operating temperature and is then shut down, it refuses to restart. It will not restart until the engine temperature drops well below operating temperature. Sometimes the engine will crank slowly when hot.

I have changed the coil and changed the resister. The starter checks good and is well grounded. I have eliminated an electrical safety shut off switch.

This problem has persisted for five years and is trying my patience!

It is possible the carburetor is leaking down the fuel level into the engine causing flooding, through the power valve or it's gasket. Easy to check by removing the carb. top and measure off fuel level in float bowl then give it 10-20 min and re check fuel level.

When attempting a hot restart, does the starter turn over as normal, or does it drag?

Have you checked for spark at the plug when it won't fire?

Bob, You will have to check each electrical part and fuel system component to make sure it's working properly. Also, check all wiring in ignition circuit including at the ignition switch. 4dFord/SC question is a good place to begin.

Replace the condensor and carry a spare. Mount the condensor next to the coil. It won't know the difference but easier to change out. Napa makes a good one.

Try running a jumper wire from the neg. battery post to the batt. side of coil, when the engine is warm. I'm assuming positive ground. If it starts easy then, look for a problem somewhere between the battery and coil, ie: wires, connections, resister, switch, etc. I've always said all of this online diagnosing, even by the experts among us ,is at best educated guesswork.

I guess its still 6 volts. Do you have a round coil that doesn't need resister.
Ford in 47 had a resister that was .35 ohms and the early ones like 39 had .5 ohms.
Say the amps were 3 x.35=1.05 volts, same 3x.5=1.5 you could lose .5 volts to coil.
If you have another battery or battery charger power the key side to coil using the res.
This will give you 6 volts to ign then start. Another take wire out of coil see if you have 1/2 spark when cranking.
You could get kit to change to round coil no resister needed like a 1950 ford coil.
My guess its ign problem.

BB,
How about when the motor is up to temp and you continue to drive , say 50 miles, does the motor still run fine or are you beginning to experience missing or bucking. If it's running fine after a 50 mile drive and then after a shut down for lunch it will not start I will go with Terry, the some what common 94 carb internal leak down.

The above ideas all have merit. I would add, make sure all paint is removed from the two contacting surfaces of where starter and the mounting surface meet. Impedence there increases with heat, and can drop spark needs to below minimum, as well as making the starter drag.

Also, will it start right up immediately after shutdown?

Sometimes when my 49 is hot or warmed up I need to start it like a flooded engine. Your car should crank vigorously whether hot or cold.

6 Volt systems have welding cable diameter cables, much thicker than 12, chk cable starter to solenoid--thick , tight and clean...batt to sol same thing...12 volt cables will
work but not well, esp hot..
--If you want, Ford service recommended to take 12v jump on the starter side of solenoid, as it isolates rest of system..cranks like a mother--see if that starts it..if so, you confirm
cranking issue, not the other fine suggestions....
