The more complete the car, the easier the restoration process. Some of the Mercury specific parts are getting hard to source.

Great progress on all fronts!

I know it isn't any of my business, but I have to mention something (as I've spent a lot of time around heavy equipment). Ask yourself the question of what would happen to you if you blew a hydraulic line and were underneath your car at the time?

I hate to be "Mr. Safety" on here, but I would never be working underneath anything that might fall on me - while having to trust that any of our heavy equipment was guaranteed to keep me safe. I'd have a chain, wood cribs, cables or something as a backup. Maybe you had something in place - I hope so.


I'll stop being your Mother now . . but I couldn't help myself.

Okay, back to regular Ford Barn programming . . .

I have to agree with bored&stroked here, In my thirty+ yrs of working on cars, I saw 2 mechanics killed when the floor jack they were depending on blew a seal.Just remember, your head is like an egg in it's shell, once you break the shell you get scrambled eggs! BTW really nice car, I've been working on a'48 coupe for eight yrs. and counting

Good thoughts on safety. What I use is a piece of heavy angle iron tied to the lift cylinder with hose clamps. The angle iron is positioned between the cylinder rod and the cylinder barrel. That way if a hose or seal fails, the loader can't fall because the iron will hold it in place. I think most equipment now comes with this same type of safety devise on a hinge.

Glad you have something in place - as long as you take the time to use it. I know that just about every time I've done something stupid that could injure or kill me (or others), it was because I was either in a hurry and/or didn't want to be bothered by that "extra step". This is especially true when we're young - we just don't think about bad things that can hurt us . . . amazing that we've survived our youth. LOL


On our BobCats, we have a similar metal piece (from the factory) that is used to hold/lock the main lift arms up when doing maintenance on the machine . . . I always use them. I have great respect for heavy metal objects - especially big Yellow Metal.

Just wanting you to be safe . . . and for you to be around to finish the Merc!

All new brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, brake lines, fuel tank and line, convert to tube shocks all four wheels, paint under carriage.

I have finished the engine rebuild. Thanks to all you guys and your knowledge and posts, I think it will work. I have 8RT water pumps, a modified dist. from Charlie NY, a mercury rear sump oil pan with oil pickup, a cast bell housing with matching starter plate, and redrilled and tapped flywheel to accept the 1948 Mercury clutch and pressure plate. All these changes are because you guys guided me in knowing what would be needed.

Thanks. Knew is wasn't Maize Yellow, its a 68 Mustang colour option and looks better on you your car in my opinion. This will be a stunning car when done. please keep posting progress photos.

Over what period of time have you made this progress? I ask because no human could have done all this in a couple months....

I drug this home in the last of October. But I am 76 and retired, so I can work on it every day. Luckily I am able to do it all myself, so I don't need to wait on outside sources except for parts. Both of my garages are heated and air condition so that helps.

Wife said I had to take a break and help her, but now I am back at it. Notice how I solved the amp gauge issue. Also you can see how I mounted my fuel reg and gauge. I also relocated the oil filter behind the battery box.
