I change the oil after 100 miles after I have had the engine open. I try to be as clean as possible but there is always some crap that gets in. I just use a low cost oil for the first 100 mile change. I also use an oil filter.

By the way, I should have mentioned that I use the Valvoline brand racing oil. I also should mention to use a multi weight oil like 30-50. Those numbers don't mean that the viscosity jumps to different values as the oil gets hot, but that the viscosity curve is not as steep. That means that the oil keeps doing its job as it warms up.
