Series of questions on timing gear replacement
I recently opened my timing cover for the first time and found that the timing gear had some degraded teeth and the camshaft nut had been beat to hell by a previous owner, so I decided to replace it. Some questions:
Thanks in advance. Last edited by alexiskai; 11-01-2020 at 02:41 PM. |

Re: Series of questions on timing gear replacement
Thanks Werner, I reviewed your thread. As someone commented, the chiseling done to my camshaft nut kept me from getting the tool onto it until I got in there with a Dremel (with flexible extension) and ground off the protruding points. I just now got the nut off with a breaker bar.
I looked at a few different solutions for locking the gear while pulling on the nut. I settled on using two short pieces of flat steel, clamped as tightly as possible on either side of the gear. Worked great. Anyone have tips on installation of the new (laminated) gear? |

Re: Series of questions on timing gear replacement
Just wanted to check back in and report that everything went fine, and I even managed to align the timing and crank marks correctly on the first try with the radiator in place. Woohoo.
