Default Does Anyone Know of a Good Car Touring App?

I participated in a “social distancing” parade last weekend. The trip had police escorts in the high traffic sections of the two cities, but the car group still got broken apart due to stop lights. Some folks made wrong turns, which broke up the group even more. There were 50+ cars involved, and the trip was over 40 miles long with a number of parade stops at hospitals and nursing homes along the way.

Does anyone know of a good car touring cell phone app that would make sharing a route easier? It would be nice to be able to track where the individual cars are among the way too on case someone breaks down or gets lost.

With another car club, we have had good success with a couple of iPhone apps that allow you to create a route, then share the gpx file with other users of the apps. They both provide turn by turn navigation once the route is loaded, and you can add stops along the route. One is inRoute (carobapps.com/products/inroute) and the other is Scenic Motorcycle Navigation (scenicapp.space).

We also good quality two-way radios in at least several of the vehicles to help keep everyone together.

Well, in a nutshell what you are looking for is something GPS integrated.

Someone will map out the route and then upload a GPX file to one of several hosting websites. Then the file can be e-mailed or downloaded to personal devices and these drivers can follow the route they downloaded.

I will also tell you that the tour organizer always needs to stress that it is each driver's responsibility to keep an eye on the vehicle behind them. When a turn is made, the car in the lead needs to make sure the car behind them sees them turning.

It looks like Google Maps could be useful. You can plan a route on a PC, email the route to yourself, and forward that email to the route participants.

The participants should be able to access the route via their iPhone email app, which would in turn open the route in Google Maps.

That’s a bit convoluted, but it’s free, and it would have been easier to follow that what we had last weekend.

It still would be nice to have a way to find the “lost sheep” that stray off the route’s path.

Thanks, Kevin. I did download the apps for trial.

You can create a *.gpx using the route planner in Google maps. After planning your route, be sure to hit enter before copying the Google address. In another window go to the website "https://mapstogpx.com" and paste in the Google address from your planned route. The Maps to GPX website will generate a GPX file that you can copy into your phone and other navigation devices.

Interesting.

I tried it, but how do you copy the GPX file to your phone?

I have and love InRoute. The great thing about it is you tell it what route you want to take even it it is a dirt road. You set up weigh points to have it take you the way YOU want to go not some prescribed route. I'm not a computer wiz so I'm not sure about getting it to others but there is probably some way to do it.

I’m curious. Do you use the free limited version, or do you use the paid version? $29 a year or so?

If you are using the paid version, does everyone in your group need to use the paid version?

I got my InRoute some years ago and it was as I remember a 15 dollar version that let you put in 150 weigh points. The version available now only lets you put in 3 weigh points which is not nearly enough. If you want 150 points you have to pay so much a month which I don't like. I'm not a computer wiz so I'm not sure about getting it to others but there is probably some way to do it.

In our group we do all use the paid version, we found it was worth it.
