Rear wheel bearings
I am usually over on the Model A side but I have a question you guys will be more able to answer, I think.
A common repair for the Model A rear hub/wheel bearing is to put a sleeve in the hub and one on the trumpet but that doesn't leave enough space for the Model A rollers so V8 ones are used. I need to do such a repair and I happen to have on the shelf, a pair of new V8 hubs. I could just sleeve the trumpet and use V8 rollers to put it together but I'm not sure how hard the bearing surface in the hub is. I know that the sleeves for hubs and trumpets available from the vendors are too soft so I might have to make my own and harden them properly. Anyway, my question is - Where do I get the best roller sets or am I better to get decent originals if I can. If the latter, where do I get them. Originals of these parts are simply not available here. (in Australia)

Re: Rear wheel bearings
Arnold, the hubs on the 33/34 are as hard as the bearing on the trumpet,
If I was home I could shoot you my drawings to use the nu 1010 rollers, But we are at Mt Isa for the rodeo in the 33 Lawrie |

Re: Rear wheel bearings
The ford part# you’ll need is 68-1225. Where I work at, we sell them NOS AND NEW. While the new ones are made overseas I have personally used them with no issues thus far.

Re: Rear wheel bearings
Also, the early v8 used the same roller as the A,
If you look in the green bible you will see when the V8s went to the smaller roller brg, they uses a sleave in the hub,and the same seal as the A for a bit, then went to a hub with no sleave I think and a smaller seal than the A Lawrie |

I hope you are having a good trip!! Synchro909, Michael Driskell (35fordtn) @ Third Generation Automotive is a great source for your bearings and many other early Ford part needs.

Re: Rear wheel bearings
The problem with some new roller bearings are not that the rollers are not hard but the end plates of the bearing are soft or not hardened at all. Touch them with a file and you will know. I bought some new German made ones several years ago which had soft end plates. I would not be game to use them but I guess they might work OK for a while. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Rear wheel bearings
Kevin, the ones with soft end plates WILL let the rollers eat into the end plates, then the little pin part of the roller will eat into the hub and generate a pile of hard filings that will turn the grease to grinding paste,I know from experience to only use nos or good original ford ones,

Re: Rear wheel bearings
Kevin, I have made up a modification to the rear bearings that use two NU 1010 roller bearings, a fair bit of matching ,but at least there is an alternative when the old ford bearings dry up.
